Nominated at the UK Coaching Awards!

Coach Core nominated for one award, plus ambassador and learning coach up for two more.

By James Burbidge · 28th October 2021

We are delighted to announce that we have been nominated for UK Coaching’s Transforming Coaching award! In addition, Wasim Collins, the learning coach on our Northumberland, Tyne & Wear programme has been nominated for Coach Developer of the Year and our ambassador Scott Hann has been nominated for High Performance Coach of the Year!

The fact that we, one of our learning coaches and ambassadors have all been selected by an independent judging panel made up of experts from across the sport and physical activity landscape, from hundreds of nominations, is a huge honour.

The Awards – regarded as one of the most prestigious within the coaching community – will take place on December 7th. They will recognise the remarkable contribution coaches make in transforming lives in communities nationwide – not only by delivering exceptional technical coaching but stepping up to support participants mentally and emotionally as we transition out of the pandemic.

“This year the bar has been raised once again, and whilst we are fully aware of the power of coaching across the UK, our brilliant coaching workforce continues to surprise us and push the boundaries to support people and their communities.”
– UK Coaching’s CEO Mark Gannon

Transforming Coaching Award

The Transforming Coaching award celebrates organisations that are transforming coaching to enhance the development and well-being of people providing and receiving great coaching.

Coach Core being recognised by UK Coaching in this way is a huge validation of the work we are doing and the efforts not just of the team here, but every employer, learning coach, mentor and partner that make up our programme consortiums around the country.

“We are shocked and humbled in equal measure, especially when you consider the other incredible organisations we know and work alongside.  Coach Core’s ultimate ambition is to be the gold standard apprenticeship charity that uses sport to change lives, so to be recognised by UK Coaching as an organisation that is transforming learning and development for our young people gives us real pride.”
– Coach Core CEO Gary Laybourne

Coach Developer of the Year

This award recognises those  who have made a significant contribution to the learning and development of coaching and individual coaches. We can’t think of a more appropriate finalist than Waz, who has brought relentless positivity, work ethic and impact to our Northumberland, Tyne & Wear programme. In fact, Waz won Learning Coach of the Year at our very own Coach Core Awards back in 2020. Waz works for Lifetime Training to provide the educational aspect of the apprenticeship, as well as pastoral support for the young people.

“Begin able to nurture people into their true selves as coaches and knowing I have helped and had an input in that is truly satisfying and rewarding. To be recognised and nominated for Coach Developer of the Year is truly overwhelming and an honour. To be rewarded for something I thrive off doing is amazing!”
– Wasim Collins

Rise are the central partners for our Northumberland, Tyne & Wear programme, pulling together the consortium of employers and working closely with Waz to ensure all the apprentices are appropriately supported. Here’s what Ruth from Rise has to say about him:

“We are very lucky to have Waz as the tutor for the coach core Tyne and Wear area. His true colours shone during lockdown and thereafter, going above and beyond to support each and every one of his students and navigate them through a range of unforeseen issues. He has instilled the apprentices with self confidence and assurance that they are good at what they do, they can succeed and they can achieve what they want.”
– Ruth Nicholson, Empowering People Strategic Lead, Rise

High Performance Coach of the Year

Max Whitlock is the most successful gymnast in Great Britain’s history and Scott Hann’s has been his long-term coach – as well as working with many other elite gymnasts. This nomination for the High Performance Coach of the Year is well-justified recognition for the impact his work has had. We are continually honoured to have both Scott and Max as ambassadors for our charity, and Scott’s gym has been employing Coach Core apprentices since 2017.
