Coach Core partner with British Cycling as part of the 2022 Commonwealth Games legacy

In an exciting new partnership, Coach Core are working directly with British Cycling - the national governing body of cycling - to support them in recruiting and developing two new apprenticeship roles.

Whether it’s winning gold medals, inspiring millions to get on their bikes or campaigning on behalf of their 150,000 members, British Cycling are leading their sport and inspiring communities – with bold ambitions to further grow and diversify in the years ahead.

These apprenticeship positions have been created to build on the enthusiasm and engagement in cycling generated by the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The apprentices will be employed within the Participation Team at British Cycling, working on the Commonwealth Games Legacy Plan in the West Midlands. They will be:

  • providing coaching support to British Cycling’s City Academy Programme,
  • supporting the Commonwealth Games Activation Plan,
  • leading and supporting the development, design and implementation of the ‘DNA of Cycling Skills’ award for young people,
  • recruiting and developing a new generation of young volunteers
  • identifying and tackling inequalities through a local community approach

This programme has been made possible thanks to support from Sport England’s Birmingham 2022 Sport Participation, Innovation and Digital Fund. It is Coach Core’s latest partnership with a sporting national governing body, following on the back of our announcement about a project with England Boxing in May.

“The introduction of these apprenticeships provides a fantastic opportunity for us to diversify our workforce and to learn from other governing bodies. Young people are key to our future success as a sport and the two apprentices will give us the chance to learn from and understand the views of young people so that we can continue to grow our sport from entry level to all stages of the rider pathway – across all eight of disciplines, and with a keen focus on tackling inequalities. They will also help to amplify the voice of young people and to identify and develop future young leaders.”

Dani Every, British Cycling’s Cycling Delivery Director

“As a regular cyclist, and a dad to two little riders, I know first-hand the multiple benefits the sport of cycling can have on the lives of young people. The different disciplines, from BMX to mountain biking to road riding, all make for a fun, engaging experience that also allows the rider to feel free, learn many new skills and create new friends too. In cities like Birmingham, where there are areas of multiple challenge, cycling can do so much to help overcome this and have people engage with their local area positively. I am therefore so excited to know that Coach Core apprentices, as young, relatable role models, will be supporting British Cycling to build on the Commonwealth buzz to ultimately get more West Midlands residents out on their bikes and unlocking all that potential!”
