South Wales

The Coach Core South Wales programme works differently to other locations, with the Welsh Rugby Union being the sole employer for all apprentices. Additionally, unlike most other programmes, this scheme is 12 months long.

The apprentices work within the community teams of the Cardiff Blues, Gwent Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets and are also mentored by a range of WRU development staff, including the Apprentice Manager, Regional Managers, Regional Rugby Coordinators and the programme’s apprenticeship officer. Apprentices also gain knowledge and hands on experience with the school club hub officers based in secondary schools and further education establishments within their assigned regions.

Studying for their qualification (Level 3 Certificate & Diploma in Sports Development), they also benefit from the time given to them by the WRU Group staff, including those based at the Principality Stadium. This helps to complete the required units of study and get a good understanding of what it takes to become an employee of the governing body of the national sport of Wales.

The apprentices are contracted for 30 hours a week, and already qualified to deliver rugby development sessions. They have been involved with boys and girls’ elite squads, primary and secondary schools, clubs and colleges, to help increase habitual participation in sport, and rugby specifically. They have also attended a number of professional/national events to help promote the WRU and Coach Core programme with great success.
